Yoga Mat Thickness: Why a Thicker Mat Isn't Automatically Better
Thicker means more cushioning and less stability — the trade-off nobody mentions. How to pick by what you practise, with two price-checked mats.
The decision problem
Mat shopping looks like a thickness contest and it isn't. Cushioning and stability pull in opposite directions. A thick mat is kinder to knees and spine on the floor; the same softness lets your standing foot sink and wobble in balance poses. A thin mat is stable and connected to the floor, and unforgiving when you kneel. There is no mat that is best at both — there is only the one that matches what you actually do.
Match the mat to the practice
- Standing, balance and flow work — go thinner. You want to feel the floor. A soft mat actively works against single-leg poses.
- Restorative, floor work, pilates, or sore knees — go thicker. Joint comfort is the whole point and you are rarely balancing on one foot.
- General home exercise and stretching — a thicker general-purpose mat is the safer default. Most home workouts involve more floor contact than balance.
- Travel — thin folds and packs; thick does not. This decides it.
The things that matter more than thickness
- Grip when you sweat. A dry-grippy surface can turn slick when damp. This ruins more practices than thickness ever does.
- Length and width. Standard mats are cut short for taller people. If you are over about 5'10", check the listed dimensions before anything else.
- Whether it stays flat. A mat that curls at the corners is a trip hazard for its entire life.
- How it cleans. Open-cell surfaces grip better and absorb more; closed-cell wipes clean and grips less.

We show a reduction only when Amazon currently displays a reference price above the selling price; "% below the displayed reference price" describes that gap, not a documented price history.
Both of these are marketed on the thicker, more cushioned end — the Amazon Basics mat by its own title (“Extra Thick”), and the Gruper on non-slip grip. Check each listing's stated thickness and dimensions against the guidance above; at this price level those two numbers, not the brand, are what you are choosing between.
Our read
For general home exercise, either of these does the job and the deciding factor is dimensions and grip, not the few dollars between them. If your practice is mostly standing balance work, neither extra-thick option is ideal — buy thinner than both.
Limitations & alternatives
Budget mats wear out; expect to replace one with heavy use. If you practise daily, a heavier natural-rubber mat costs more and lasts considerably longer. And for knees specifically, a folded towel or a dedicated knee pad on a thin mat beats a thick mat that ruins your balance.
